Dust
Short concept film using Generative AI
Client: Nanoframe
Date: 2023-06
Category: Concept film

Assumptions
This experimental project aimed to explore the potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in creating realistic film shots that are difficult or expensive to achieve using traditional methods. The goal was to test whether AI could be used to generate scenes that require complex special effects, a large number of extras, difficult-to-access locations, or dangerous acrobatics. The project had an exploratory nature and aimed to evaluate the quality, realism, and control over the generated materials, as well as comparing the efficiency and costs of this approach to traditional film production methods. The results were intended to help determine the potential applications of AI in future film projects.

Technology & Approach
The project used a variety of AI tools to generate images and video sequences, including models based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and diffusion. Different models and techniques were tested, such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and DALL-E 2, introducing textual descriptions and parameters to control the generated content. Different visual styles, compositions, lighting and perspectives were experimented with. The generated content was then assessed for quality, realism, consistency and compliance with the assumptions. They were compared with reference footage and opportunities for further refinement and control over the generation process were explored. The project results provided valuable insights into the current capabilities and limitations of generative AI in the context of film production.
